Martijn Susla (born in Knokke-Heist in 1999) is a clarinetist. Driven by his passion for new musical ideas and his knack for dynamic collaboration with composers, he primarily focuses on contemporary music.
He began his musical education in Knokke-Heist under Stephan Vermeersch, where his curiosity for the 'different' and new repertoire was sparked. After completing a bachelor's degree in Antwerp with Ivo Lybeert and a master's degree in Porto with Nuno Pinto, Martijn is currently pursuing a specialized master's degree in contemporary music performance in Basel. There, he is part of the ensemble Zone Expérimentale and receives coaching from leading figures such as Marcus Weiss, Mike Svoboda, Sarah Maria Sun, and Yaron Deutsch.
Martijn has collaborated with composers like Helmut Lachenmann, Stefan Prins, Johannes Kreidler, and Joanna Bailie, and has performed under the direction of Ilan Volkov, Peter Rundel, and Baldur Brönniman. He has attended classes and masterclasses with renowned musicians such as Jaan Bossier, Carl Rosman, Yehuda Gilad, António Saiote, Florent Héau, Carlos Ferreira, Vitor Fernandes, and Andrew Marriner.
He has appeared on international stages, performing as part of Zone Expérimentale at the Tzlil Meudcan festival (Tel Aviv) or as part of the Ictus ensemble at festivals like Rainy Days (Luxembourg), Wien Modern, Donaueschingen Musiktage, and La Biennale di Venezia.
