Pietro Elia Barcellona is an Italian contrabassist, composer and improviser active in the fields of experimental music involving both improvisation and written material.
Pietro has worked with composers such as Beat Furrer and Helmut LacheNmann and has performed in festivals such as Gaudeamus FESTIVAL (NL), Musikfestival BerN, IMPULS FESTIVAL (At), Opera Forward Festival (NL), Tel Aviv International Festival for Contemporary Music, and Holland Festival.
He has collaborated and currently collaborates with ensembles and orchestras such as Ensemble Scordatura, Ensemble Recherche, Ensemble Zone Expérimentale, the Junger Künstler Bayreuth Orchestra (First contrabass), and Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble. He has taken part in CD recordings for labels such as Clean Feed RECORDS and Another Timbre.
Pietro has studied with, among other, Dario Calderone and Uli Fussenegger. He earned a bachelor of music from Conservatorium van Amsterdam and he is currently pursuing a MA degree in music performance with specialization in contemporary music at the Hochschule für Musik Basel with the support of funding from the Nicati-de Luze Foundation and the Cecile and Albert Kupper Foundation.
Pietro is interested in exploring the boundaries of composition and improvisation as well as the relationship between musical gesture and rhythm.
